A concrete surface retarder is a chemical applied to fresh concrete to delay the setting of the top surface mortar while the underlying concrete cures normally. Once hardened, the un-set surface paste is washed away to reveal a decorative exposed aggregate finish or create a mechanical key for future bonding

How They Work
Depth Control: Retarders penetrate and control the depth of surface retardation (typically 3 mm to 12 mm) without compromising the structural integrity or compressive strength of the rest of the slab.
Reversible Delay: These chemicals temporarily delay cement hydration but do not permanently kill the set. Eventually, the retarded surface hardens to full strength.
Common Types and Application
Horizontal Surfaces (Formula S / Rugasol C): Liquid or gel compounds sprayed or rolled onto freshly poured flatwork after the initial bleed water has evaporated.
Vertical Surfaces (Rugasol FC): Thicker formulations or paper liners applied to the inside of formwork before pouring concrete, allowing for aggregate exposure on cast walls and precast elements.
Depth of Etch: often ranging from light sand finishes to deep aggregate exposures.
How to Use
Apply Uniformly: Spray or roll the retarder evenly onto the fresh concrete once bleed water dissipates.
Wait for Set: Allow the underlying concrete to cure (typically 12 to 24 hours depending on temperature and product strength).
Wash Off: Use a stiff brush and a high-pressure water sprayer (or hose) to scrub and flush away the un-set top layer, exposing the underlying aggregate.
